As an undergraduate student at the University of Colorado in Boulder, I majored in fine art and focused on sculptural media. In my final semester I decided to use a medium that I understood and felt comfortable with: fiber. My ”final” project, which led to my extending my studies into an additional summer, was a large piece made of cloth stretched over a metal armature. The subsequent summer’s creations were a series of smaller studies using the same basic technique.
I later I took a weaving class and quickly found that I loved the medium, but found that the straight lines of loom weaving felt too confining. Thus I tried weaving curves and weaving on three dimensional structures, similar to my undergraduate creations.
For the past thirty years I have been developing my art, adding new techniques from knitting and crochet, to paper making, lost-wax bronze casting, wood working, welding, felting, and needle felting. Each new technique has added to my repertoire of skills, and has allowed me to expand my options when trying to create a particular piece.

Even as I learn to control each medium, I also allow myself to use chance occurrences and surprises to add to my repertoire and to challenge me to be free and flexible in the creative process.
I have exhibited in a number of venues in Boise, Idaho, where I
live, most recently in the Washington Federal Bank. I am a member
of Boise Open Studios Cooperative (BOSCO), and will open my studio
to the public and be an exhibitor in their show in October 2008. I
followed an exhibit in 2007 in the Carnegie Art Center in Walla
Walla, Washington by being accepted into their 2008 Juried Show
and received the second prize, the Jean Jamison Memorial Award. I
have art work in private and public spaces in Idaho, Iowa, Nevada,
New Jersey, New Hampshire, Washington, Wisconsin, and Alberta,
Canada. |
